Restaurant parked off Brick Lane makes a big boost serving inside a bus
Londoners are well-known for their affectionate relationship with the old Routemasters, the quaint double-decker buses complete with a conductor have become something of a vintage symbol of the city. Pure nostalgia. Londoners are so passionate about these old vehicles that when they were taken out of circulation in 2005 there was national uproar. Today, Routemasters circulate as tourist buses in the centre of London. The only exception being in Brick Lane.
Taking advantage of the popularity of the old iconic bus, vegetrian restaurant Rootmaster – playing on the original name – have set up shop in a stationary Routemaster, close to the never-ending nightlife of Brick Lane. The bus-restaurant is a more than politically correct option. Not only does it promote a healthy lifestyle, recycling as much as possible (cutlery, etc.), the restaurant also supports organisations such as PETA, which defends animal rights.
Pop along on the weekend, clothes shop on Brick Lane and then relax on the top deck of the cosy bus (the lower deck functioning as the kitchen). Rootmaster sits in the car park opposite the Old Truman Brewery (by the Banksy and D*Face pieces). You can eat at tables outside, perhaps not in this weather... and there will be a festive menu towards Christmas - as if you need any morereason to go - and it certainly beats fumbling a greasy kebab falling around on a (bendy) nightbus home.
