Expanding landscapes
Top Brasilian photographers land together in the UK
He tried to seperate a fi ght and ended up being shot. He survived and used the money he recieved in compensation to buy a ticket to the USA. And that’s how Brasilian artist Vik Muniz’ story begins, and he’s gone on to become one of the biggest names in contemporary art.
His most famous work is his portrait of Seu Jorge, which was used on the cover of Cru (2004). But his artwork is varied: paintings made out of chocolate (remember the Tribalistas CD?), photos developed with sugar, pictures made out of wire, landscapes sewn with thread, clouds drawn in the sky. It may all sound a bit strange, and to be honest, it is, but it’s evidently inspired. Vik promises it’s not complicated, stating himself: “I don’t need anyone to explain what I do”.
Vik Muniz, together with Mauro Restiffe, Miguel Rio Branco, Rochelle Costi, Rosângela Rennó and Rubens Mano – fi ve major Brasilian photographers – are taking part in the Disponha exhibition at Gallery 32, from the 4th to the 14th of December.
The artists all share the same goal: expanding the limits of photography to incorporate other fi elds of knowledge. Miguel, for example, explores the fusion between realism and poetry in his series of photos of boxers, taken in Rio de Janeiro in the 90s. Rubens Mano – whose work “Disponha” gave
its name to the exhibition – refl ects on the interaction between the artist, his work and the environment surrounding him.
Vik Muniz Will be exhibiting a large-scale work inspired by Land Art. The show is a collaborative project between the Brasilian Embassy and the Museu Inhotim, in Minas Gerais.
