Make mine an original

Tired of highstreet humdrum? Try these colourful brasilian cats

There’s nothing worse than Oxford Street at the end of the year. I’m not just being a scrooge: I know that the Christmas lights, the festive songs and the window decorations try and make the experience more... agreeable (as if that were possible). But even just thinking about that sea of people flowing throught the streets and stores in search of presents makes my heart sink. And then there’s the collective hysteria, the queues at the checkout, the hot, packed tube.... exhausting! So we’ve come to a decision: this year JungleDrums is going to be part of the team that gives away original presents. If you’re looking for a creative gift, handmade goodies are the perfect idea.

Brasilians Claudia Fajkarz and Andréa Onishi have set up a charming little blog called Superziper, offering art and craft tips. For now, the site is written in Portuguese, but an English version is on it's way, (but then, I say: if you know a little bit of Portuguese, why not exercise it?). Their tips are useful for both the dab-handed and newcomers to the world of sewing.

They also sell their own handmade products on the site, such as their cute crochet cactus (£6), smart stuffed animals made out of recycled bed sheets (£6), clothes for Blythe dolls (£9), and clay birds which can be used as Christmas tree decorations (a packet of fi ve birds costs £4). They can send packages off to Brasil, the UK and other countries, but the prices quoted above don’t include postage and packaging. Their virtual shop is all written in English, but orders can also be taken by emailing their blog. JD
