The Amazonian Wild West

Maraj贸 is a land of great distances. Travelling is difficult during the rainy season, which takes up almost the first half of the year. Your best bet is to visit the east of Maraj贸 during the summer, when you can also travel to Cachoeira do Arari.

Cachoeira is home to an important archaeological site featuring pottery produced by the Nuaruaque Indians, the aboriginal inhabitants of Maraj贸. The oldest pieces date to around 980 BC. The Maraj贸 Museum in Cachoeira houses a collection of artefacts and reveals something of the island's history, drawing on the writing of Father Giovanni Gallo.

We crossed the impressive Lago Arari by boat. The lake is so big that it was as if we were at sea. We arrived at Vila do Jenipapo in the district of Santa Cruz do Arari, a town comprised of houses on stilts that tower above the waters. When the lake dries up over summer, you can walk from one house to the other. Vila do Jenipapo is a bit like an Amazonian Wild West. The climate, isolation and poverty strengthen the locals' spirit, in a land where mankind has learn to respect the most rigid laws of nature.
