Hip-hop's high hill
Hey guys, watch out! There is a gal on the scene
“Wanting to do something isn’t enough, we need to act”. That’s the message that Negra Rê is pushing on the Rio (and now London) hip-hop scene. Openning one of Lauryn Hill's shows, she's a fi erce diva who simply outclasses many of the homies choking up the MC leagues, Negra Rê is one of the brightest stars in Brasilian hip-hop, a fi eld that was, until recently, dominated by men. The hit “Revolta”, her first demo-single, caused controversy by showing just one side of the constant confl icts between the police and favela dwellers of Rio.
Stay on the look out - the rapper is in London at the moment. Through a British Council-funded exchange programme she's getting ready to start up a new line of attack, where the voice of the ghetto will get a turn to shine! The artist took part in the only female hip-hop festival in the UK, November's b.supreme festival, with the MC Soweto Kinch. Now, with suitcase almost packed, she intends to carry on the struggle of making hip-hop that transcends rap, break dancing, DJs and graffi ti to promote social consciousness. JD
