São Paulo: Fresh Faced São Paulo
Cuisine
São Paulo’s cosmopolitan cuisine has always been one of its strong points and still reflects the presence of immigrants from across the world who came to the city over the course of the last century. Once considered overly conservative, new restaurants have opted for high visual impact and open-air spaces to attract customers.
Close to one of the country’s busiest avenues, Avenida Paulista, a new venue has drawn attention due to its peaceful, refined atmosphere and luscious green surroundings. The Restaurante Capim Santo is surrounded by a tropical garden full of Jabuticaba trees and is a breath of fresh air in the smog-ridden city centre. Tables are spread throughout the garden and the buffet is located in the middle. The kitchen is partitioned off by a glass wall, which not only adds to the locale’s charm, it also serves to quell the curiosity of anygastronomic voyeurs dining out.
The restaurant serves contemporary Brasilian cuisine that goes beyond your typical beans and caipirinha fare, offering specialities such as lobster vatapá, cassava nhoque and tapioca de queijo, as well as mouthwatering desserts such as brigadeiro and guava creme brulê... the restaurant also offers cookery courses.
Nightlife
Going out is a favourite pastime amongst Paulistanos, which explains why so many new clubs are always opening. One of the most recent additions is the Café de La Musique, a club combining fashion, music and great food in “a modern building with atmospheric lighting and well distributed décor that gives the venue a real sense of charm”, explains architect Sabrine Santos. The club’s design was dreamt up by fashion designers Ricardo Almeida, Fause Haten and Amir Slama, who give the café an overhaul every six months in line with their new collections. Rather than being inhospitable, the venue’s high walls and open-plan design links the different spaces together. The music policy is another big difference. DJs play jazz, broken beats and deep house, creating a really chilled-out atmosphere. The venue’s aspirations reflect the people who hang out there: people from the fashion industry, celebrities and people who want to be seen – a veritable catwalk of colourful personas all do their best to draw attention to themselves.
Be it for the music, the art, the food or for the chance to live la vida loca, make sure you visit the São Paulo that’s arising anew from the ashes.
