BREAK IT DOWN - Remarkable Hip Hop dance theatre festival's back at Sadler's Wells

A year or so ago I went to see Breakin' Convention, a hip-hop dance festival. I was a bit wary of all the hype surrounding the shows. I knew that long before the performances took place, Sadler's Wells had sold out completely. What I didn't bank on was that Breakin' Convention would completely blow me away.

The festival, which is spread over three days this year, is spectacular. Astoundingly so. It's not just an event put on to promote street dance; it's an event that brings together some of the most phenomenal artists in the fi eld, such as French group Styl'O'styl. The curation is made by Jonzi D, one of the most respected names of the movement. The Guardian defi ned the hip-hop dance on show as "boiling with energy", and it's diffi cult to come up with adjectives that do the event more justice.

The performances are infl uenced by mime, but are all propelled by the strong rhythms of hip-hop. If you can get your hands on a ticket, don't miss the chance to go, and keep a look out for the French group (they were incredible last year), and for Brasilian group Membros.
