CINE JUNGLE SQUAD - Our new cinema initiative is on the cards from April onwards

Jungle CineClub is our brand new cinema initiative due to roll at the respected cinema venue the Rich Mix Cultural Foundation, which spans the multicultural and vibrant areas of Shoreditch and Bethnal Green. Screenings will be monthly between April and November 2008, with a total of 7 feature films, a compilation of short movies and Q&A sessions with special guests, such as actors and film directors.

JungleDrums, working in partnership with the ABC Trust and the Rich Mix, decided to build on the success of Elite Squad and the discussions around violence in Brasilian cinema in the international media by dedicating the first edition of Jungle CineClub to the subject.

The films exhibited will investigate the origins of violence in Brasil and its social implications, demonstrating that Brasilian cinema is not a celebration of gore and bloodshed, but a vehicle for denouncing violence. It will be called 'Digging up the social roots of violence in Brasil'.

The first screening, on April 10th, will be City of Men (by Paulo Morelli), a story of the struggle experienced by slum-dwellers Acerola and Laranjinha during a gangster war in a Rio favela. Other screenings will include the acclaimed Bus 174 and Black God, White Devil, as well as other renowned Brasilian films dealing with the subject of violence.

Besides the screenings we will hold Q&A sessions with directors and artists from the movies. Also, before each movie we will exhibit totally independent short films supported by Qisuco. Qisuco aims to promote the idea that experimental movies can also be entertainment. To round off each CineClub session, we will have a party in the Rich Mix Bar with celebrity Brasilian DJs.
