Belo Horizonte: Bar Life Style
Bars are the perfect way to start off any night out. You know, it’s difficult to arrange somewhere to meet up with your friends before going out and expect them all to turn up. It’s a lot more practical to arrange to get together at a laid-back bar, line everyone’s stomachs with snacks and then decide on where to go. Anyone heading off to hit Belo Horizonte’s nightlife normally heads towards Savassi area. The district is home to the city’s most sophisticated bars and clubs, like the recently inaugurated Roxy Club, which plays house and electro music and has a futuristic design, or A Obra, where you’ll find rock music and live bands. But if none of this floats your boat there’s always a bar around the corner.
Another creative option which just goes to show how Mineiros manage to transform mundane pleasures into major celebrations is the Contorna. You might say that this is a Brasilian version of the infamous Circle Line Pub Crawl in London: instead of stopping at every station along the Circle
Line for a pint, revellers tackle the 9-mile stretch of Avenida do Contorno on foot, the
avenue surrounding the whole city centre, with obligatory stop-offs at bars en route.
If today was the day of the bar crawl, then the survivors would probably end up joining us for one last ritual: daybreak at the Bar do Bolão. The bar, situated in Duque de Caxias Square, welcomes with open arms starving clubbers looking for a quick hangover cure. Specialities include the famous Rochedão do Bolão, a hefty serving of spaghetti, rice, beans, eggs, chips and meat of your choice. Scoffing down the food is the last challenge of my intense day, but as I’ve learnt over here, there’s no such thing as too much.
