An Englishman in Potiguar
Global football star in Brasil to promote new football project.
English mid-fielder, David Beckham, was in Natal, capital of Rio Grande do Norte, to promote his new sporting complex, the âBeckham World of Sportâ. The luxury resort is set to be built in the area and will encompass, besides a training ground, eight football pitches, with the provision to build a 10 thousand capacity stadium. It will also house a âDavid Beckham Academyâ, a football scholarship programme which will offer study grants to the regionâs deprived youth.
During the press conference, the player said he only wants to develop football in Brasil. âIâm not here to teach football to Brasilians, because, of course, theyâre the best in the world. Iâm really proud of my academies in London and Los Angeles and Iâm happy because now Brasilian kids can also benefit from world-class facilitiesâ.
Beckhamâs trip was financed by the Norwegian group, âBrasil Developmentâ, responsible for the resortâs construction. âI am honoured to be associated with this project which will develop some of the most modern sporting facilities in Brasil; they will certainly produce the desired results.â
The star began his career at Manchester United in 1992, a team of which he had always been a fan. But he made his debut for the first team in 1994 against the Turkish side, Galatasaray. The teamâs greatest moment came in 1999 when Man U won the Premiership, the FA Cup and the Championsâ League. In 2003 Beckham was sold to Real Madrid for 25 million pounds, where he played with Brasilians, Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos.
In July of last year he signed yet another contract. However this time it was a little on the unusual side; Beckham joined LA Galaxy, based in Los Angeles, USA. Whether itâs a marketing ploy or not, the English player certainly wants to leave his mark on the world.
